Fifty Venezuelans sent to Martha's Vineyard

About 50 Venezuelan immigrants seeking asylum in the United States landed Wednesday afternoon on the island of Martha's Vineyard, off Cape Cod. And it wasn't for sightseeing.

Lost and flabbergasted, these people were in spite of themselves at the heart of a political quarrel between Democrats and Republicans on the thorny question of American immigration policies.

They met at Martha's Vineyard on the initiative of the Republican Governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, who wanted to lecture the Democrats whose more liberal policies on irregular immigrants are irritating the opposing camp.

“Residents of Martha's Vineyard should be thrilled,” quipped Christina Pushaw, a member of Mr. DeSantis' team, on Twitter. Illegal aliens will make the city more diverse, which is a strength. Nope ? »

Irregular or not, the Venezuelans have received help from the inhabitants of Martha's Vineyard, an island known to be frequented by stars from all walks of life.

"The community has pulled together to take charge of the new arrivals," explained George Brennan, editor-in-chief of the daily Martha's Vineyard Times in a telephone interview with La Presse . This morning [Thursday] they woke up in church and had breakfast. And as it is chilly here, many were cold. We gave them warm clothes. »

Mr. Brennan added that the authorities were now considering the next steps to take to help these refugees who, divided into two planes, went down to the airport of the island with little information on their fate.

Dylan Fernandes, Democratic representative for part of Cape Cod in the Massachusetts Legislature, told local media: “First we make sure everyone is safe and as comfortable as possible. From there, we will work on longer term solutions. »

The office of Republican Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker also says it is monitoring the situation closely.

A political game

Martha's Vineyard is a small island 32 kilometers long and 16 kilometers at its widest point, about 30 kilometers from the town of Falmouth (Cape Cod) which connects it by ferry. Distributed in six agglomerations, the population residing there year-round is around 20,600 people, according to the 2020 census.

However, welcoming 50 immigrants there is a challenge. "The housing situation and housing prices on the island are catastrophic," continues George Brennan. Teachers, policemen, firefighters working on the island live off the island and commute daily. This is also my case. »

It is true that stars live [on the island of Martha's Vineyard] and that the Obamas have a summer house there. But we are also a working class community. Some have difficulty with the end of the month.

George Brennan, editor at Martha's Vineyard Times

That said, the case of Martha's Vineyard is not the first of this political showdown. In Texas, Republican Governor Greg Abbott claims to have transported some 10,000 immigrants to northern Democratic states who presented themselves at the border with Mexico. A CNN investigation determined that Texas spent $12.7 million in public funds to send busloads of migrants to Washington and New York, two heavily Democratic cities.

Another case, Thursday morning, a hundred immigrants arriving by bus in Washington were left close to the Naval Observatory, official residence of Vice President Kamala Harris.

The tactic strongly outrages Democrats. "It's a political game where we use human beings as pawns and to create chaos," says Dylan Fernandes. The White House called the maneuver "shameful" and "cruel".

“Extreme instrumentalization”

According to Valérie Beaudoin, associate researcher at the United States Observatory of the Raoul-Dandurand Chair, the situation illustrates that there is a problem at the border where the flow of migrants has been very important in the last year. She also notes that initially, the Republican strategy worked. “The majority of migrants were happy not to have to pay to travel from the border to a big city where they have family,” she says.

But in the cases of Martha's Vineyard and the Naval Observatory where migrants were left on the sidewalk without further formality, the situation has changed. “It becomes problematic when you instrumentalize these people to the extreme,” says Ms.  Beaudoin.

Remember that Governor Ron DeSantis has his sights set on becoming the Republican candidate for the 2024 presidential election. He is one of the few to show as much ambition in the face of an ever-dominant Donald Trump.

Suffering from cancer, Jane Fonda denounces the inequality of access to care in the United States, “aware” of being “privileged”

The actress published a very political message in which she regrets that many "Americans do not have" access to the quality care she receives and also denounces the role of pesticides in cancer. "My dear friends, I have something personal that I want to share". It is with her words that the American actress and activist Jane Fonda announced, Friday, September 2, that she was suffering from cancer on the social network Instagram. The 84-year-old, however, said she was optimistic about her chances of recovery. "I was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma", a cancer of the lymphatic system, "and started chemotherapy treatments ", she continued on her Instagram account. "It's a completely curable cancer. 80% of people survive, so I feel very lucky," she immediately put into perspective.  But Jane Fonda also took advantage of the announcement of her personal state of health to send a very political message. By the way, the American

Four astronauts back on earth aboard a SpaceX capsule

Four astronauts returned to Earth aboard a SpaceX capsule on Friday, ending their nearly six-month mission to the International Space Station with a splashdown in the Atlantic off Florida. Wet and windy weather in Florida delayed their return to Earth. SpaceX and NASA finally gave the green light on Friday, and the astronauts were able to leave the International Space Station, their residence since April. The capsule parachuted into the ocean off Jacksonville, Florida about five hours after leaving the ISS. She carried American NASA astronauts Kjell Lindgren, Bob Hines and Jessica Watkins, the first black woman to complete a long-duration spaceflight, as well as Italian Samantha Cristoforetti from the European Space Agency. SpaceX delivered their replacements last week. Before leaving the station, the astronauts said they were looking forward to drinking a cold drink, eating pizza and ice cream, taking a shower, enjoying nature and, of course, reuniting with their families. NASA plans
