Biden le dice a la Cámara de Representantes que el paquete de gastos de los progresistas debe estar entre $ 1.9 billones y $ 2.2 billones

Presidente Joe Biden dijo en una reunión virtual con un grupo de progresistas de la Cámara el lunes que la línea superior del paquete de red de seguridad social debe reducirse a entre $ 1.9 billones y $ 2.2 billones, según dos fuentes familiarizadas con la llamada. .


Biden le dijo al grupo, según una de las fuentes, que ese era el rango que él sentía que los senadores Joe Manchin y Kyrsten Sinema aceptarían, pero no especificó más dentro de ese rango.

Al salir de una reunión con el líder de la mayoría del Senado, Chuck Schumer, y funcionarios de la Casa Blanca el lunes por la noche, la presidenta de la Cámara de Representantes, Nancy Pelosi, dijo una vez más que la línea superior tendría que estar por debajo de los $ 3,5 billones

"Me gustaría estar en tres billones y medio de dólares, pero no lo estamos. El presidente dijo eso", dijo, y agregó: "Presten atención a lo que dice el presidente".

Los progresistas en la llamada reiteraron al presidente el lunes que siguen apoyando el paquete y quieren aprobar "un plan lo más sólido posible" a través de ambas cámaras del Congreso, dijo una fuente familiarizada con la llamada. La presidenta del Caucus Progresista del Congreso, Pramila Jayapal, agradeció a Biden por "su liderazgo" en un comunicado posterior a la reunión y reiteró que el paquete de gasto económico y el plan de infraestructura bipartidista deben avanzar juntos.

"Los progresistas lucharon para volver a encarrilar la agenda completa de Biden, y ahora estamos comenzando las negociaciones para entregarla a los trabajadores, las familias y nuestras comunidades", dijo el demócrata del estado de Washington. "Al garantizar que ambos proyectos de ley avancen juntos, nos aseguramos de no dejar a nadie atrás".

Pero al otro lado del Capitolio el lunes, Manchin no se comprometió con el nuevo cronograma establecido por los líderes del partido para encontrar un acuerdo sobre la expansión de la red de seguridad social antes del 31 de octubre.

También se resistió a los llamamientos de los progresistas y otros demócratas importantes para aumentar su precio de 1,5 billones de dólares por el paquete, que muchos, en su partido, consideran demasiado bajo para lograr objetivos políticos clave. Y trazó una "línea roja" en la Enmienda Hyde , diciendo que la inclusión de la medida que prohíbe el uso de fondos federales para la mayoría de los abortos es necesaria para que él apoye el paquete, otro punto de desacuerdo con muchos progresistas.

Según fuentes en la llamada del lunes, el grupo de legisladores del Caucus Progresista del Congreso en la llamada incluyó, entre otros, a Jayapal; Katherine Clark de Massachusetts, portavoz asistente de la Cámara; Mark Pocan de Wisconsin; Barbara Lee de California; Debbie Dingell de Michigan; Ritchie Torres de Nueva York; Ro Khanna de California; Peter Welch de Vermont; Mondaire Jones de Nueva York; Lisa Blunt Rochester de Delaware; y Peter Aguilar de California, que no es miembro del PCCh pero se desempeña como vicepresidente del Caucus Demócrata de la Cámara.

Dos miembros del liderazgo del Caucus Progresista del Congreso, la vicepresidenta Katie Porter de California y Whip Ilhan Omar de Minnesota, no fueron invitados a la llamada.

Biden está programado para reunirse virtualmente con más miembros del Caucus Demócrata de la Cámara el martes.
