Mexico: More Than 100,000 People Have Disappeared Since 1964

The number of missing persons in Mexico reached a record high on Monday, exceeding 100,000 cases listed since 1964, according to official data from the Mexican Ministry of the Interior.

According to the National Register of Missing or Unlocated Persons, 100,012 people were reported missing between March 15, 1964 and May 16, 2022. Of these, about 75% are men. The five regions of Mexico most affected by this human tragedy are the states of Jalisco (west, 14,871 cases), Tamaulipas (northeast, 11,971), Mexico City (center, 10,996) Nuevo León (north, 6,222), and from Veracruz (east, 5.736).

The first disappearances date back to the "dirty war" waged by the state against revolutionary movements in the 1960s and 1980s. But the disappearances in Mexico have multiplied in a context of violence linked to drug trafficking which has ravaged the country for 16 years.

"We demand that the Mexican State address urgently, with strength and integrity the serious crisis of disappearances and human identification that we are experiencing in Mexico, which must be understood as part of a terrible crisis of violence and insecurity”, declared the Movement for our disappeared, an association which campaigns to shed light on these disappearances. According to this association, the figure announced by the Mexican authorities is far below the number of cases recorded every day in the country.

The memory of the victims of September 11 is honored 21 years later

(New York) The United States on Sunday honored the memory of the nearly 3,000 people killed in the worst attacks ever known, September 11, 2001, which changed "the course of American history", according to the president Joe Biden. In New York, crowds gathered near the impressive Manhattan Memorial Museum fell silent several times for minutes of silence, marking the exact moments when the four planes hijacked by Islamist commandos crashed, and when the two towers of the World Trade Center had collapsed in a deluge of steel and dust. In the audience in New York, Vice President Kamala Harris listened to the very long list of victims' names. Joe Biden participated in another ceremony, at the Pentagon. "The grief fades a little over time, but the permanent absence of my father remains just as present," said the son of Jon Leslie Albert, one of the victims of the attacks, after reading his father's name. Another relative of the victim, calling on the political fig...

Fifty Venezuelans sent to Martha's Vineyard

About 50 Venezuelan immigrants seeking asylum in the United States landed Wednesday afternoon on the island of Martha's Vineyard, off Cape Cod. And it wasn't for sightseeing. Lost and flabbergasted, these people were in spite of themselves at the heart of a political quarrel between Democrats and Republicans on the thorny question of American immigration policies. They met at Martha's Vineyard on the initiative of the Republican Governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, who wanted to lecture the Democrats whose more liberal policies on irregular immigrants are irritating the opposing camp. “Residents of Martha's Vineyard should be thrilled,” quipped Christina Pushaw, a member of Mr. DeSantis' team, on Twitter. Illegal aliens will make the city more diverse, which is a strength. Nope ? » Irregular or not, the Venezuelans have received help from the inhabitants of Martha's Vineyard, an island known to be frequented by stars from all walks of life. "The community has...
