"Where's Jackie?" Joe Biden shocks by questioning a deceased parliamentarian

The American president seemed to apostrophize a Republican who died in an accident in August, during a White House conference.

An awkward moment. "Jackie, are you there?" During a conference on food insecurity and obesity, this Wednesday, September 28, US President Joe Biden challenged Jackie Walorski. Problem: the elected Republican , who represented the state of Indiana and was an important voice on food issues in Congress, died in a car accident last August.

The White House denies the confusion

During this conference on hunger, the first organized by the White House since 1969, the 79-year-old president took a moment during his speech to pay tribute to several elected Democrats and Republicans. “I want to thank each and every one of you here ,” he said, before looking for the deceased chosen one in the crowd, calling out into the void: “Jackie are you there? Despite the multiple questions asked on this subject during the White House press briefing, spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre refused to acknowledge that Joe Biden had made a mistake, indicates the ABC media . "I don't find it troubling," she explained. She also denied that the president was confused or that there was a mistake on the teleprompter. “He thought very strongly of her” , she still tried to justify.

Joe Biden recently asked after a recently deceased congresswoman at a hunger conference she helped organise, calling out the lawmaker as if she were still alive.

Biden appeared to ask if the late congresswoman Jackie Walorski was in attendance for a speech he delivered in Washington on Wednesday. During his remarks at the White House conference on hunger, nutrition and health, Biden mistakenly asked after congresswoman Jackie Walorski, who died in a car accident in August. 

Walorski died in a car crash on August 3, 2022. Two of her associates were also killed in the accident that took place in her Indiana district. The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office later found that Walorski’s car was at fault in the crash. 

It is worth noting that Biden had issued a statement at the time of her death, saying that he and the First Lady were “shocked and saddened” by the news of Walorski’s demise. Biden had also said that while he did not see Walorski eye to eye on various issues, “she was respected by members of both parties for her work on the House Ways and Means Committee on which she served.”

Walorski, along with three other lawmakers, had introduced legislation last year to convene a hunger conference. The US President, during the conference, laid out a plan to deal with high obesity rates and put an end to chronic hunger by the year 2030.
