USA: She kills a man thinking he was running over a cat

SEEN IN THE PRESS - At the wheel of her car, a 20-year-old American woman knocked down a man believing that he wanted to run over a cat.

In Cypress, California, a woman hit a man with her car, killing him instantly. While driving, Hannah Star Esser thinks she sees a man, Victor Anthony Luis, running over a cat with his car . Faced with this, she decides to get out of her car, phone in hand to film, in order to challenge the man.

After a short altercation, the woman gets back into her car, turns around and then accelerates towards the man, explains the  Los Angeles Times . Victor Anthony Luis was then thrown onto the hood and the windshield and collapsed a few meters further on the asphalt . He died on the spot before help arrived.

"We are devastated by the loss of Victor, a beloved father of five daughters, a treasured son, brother, friend and cousin ," read a statement released by his family. "This senseless act of violence robbed the world of a bright light that will never be forgotten."

A prosecutor described the killing as a "random act of violence targeting a stranger."

A California driver was charged with fatally mowing down a man whom she accused of trying to run over a cat, authorities said Wednesday.

Hannah Star Esser, 20, was charged with murder and is being held on $1 million bail in the Sept. 25 encounter in Cypress, a Southern California suburb southeast of Los Angeles, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement.

Prosecutors sa Esser confronted Luis Anthony Victor, 43, because she believed he was trying to hit a cat with his car.

Esser emerged from her vehicle and recorded a profanity-laced tirade against Victor, who also got out of his car, the statement said.

Esser drove off briefly before she made a U-turn, the statement said. It alleged that she accelerated directly into Victor, launching him onto the hood and the windshield and flipping him over several times.

Victor, who landed in the street, was pronounced dead at the scene, the statement said.

Fifty Venezuelans sent to Martha's Vineyard

About 50 Venezuelan immigrants seeking asylum in the United States landed Wednesday afternoon on the island of Martha's Vineyard, off Cape Cod. And it wasn't for sightseeing. Lost and flabbergasted, these people were in spite of themselves at the heart of a political quarrel between Democrats and Republicans on the thorny question of American immigration policies. They met at Martha's Vineyard on the initiative of the Republican Governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, who wanted to lecture the Democrats whose more liberal policies on irregular immigrants are irritating the opposing camp. “Residents of Martha's Vineyard should be thrilled,” quipped Christina Pushaw, a member of Mr. DeSantis' team, on Twitter. Illegal aliens will make the city more diverse, which is a strength. Nope ? » Irregular or not, the Venezuelans have received help from the inhabitants of Martha's Vineyard, an island known to be frequented by stars from all walks of life. "The community has...

The actress published a very political message in which she regrets that many "Americans do not have" access to the quality care she receives and also denounces the role of pesticides in cancer. "My dear friends, I have something personal that I want to share". It is with her words that the American actress and activist Jane Fonda announced, Friday, September 2, that she was suffering from cancer on the social network Instagram. The 84-year-old, however, said she was optimistic about her chances of recovery. "I was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma", a cancer of the lymphatic system, "and started chemotherapy treatments ", she continued on her Instagram account. "It's a completely curable cancer. 80% of people survive, so I feel very lucky," she immediately put into perspective.  But Jane Fonda also took advantage of the announcement of her personal state of health to send a very political message. Nuclear war, rationed energy... 33 rupture scenarios to think the unthinkable

Nuclear war, energy rationing, pirate-nation on floating barges... Throughout the summer, Challenges publishes around thirty breaking scenarios, with the collaboration of experts and the Defense Innovation Agency's Red Team of science fiction writers. Think the unthinkable. Consider the worst to be ready to face it. For decades, think tanks, staffs and intelligence services have been competing in scenarios to anticipate crises. The French army even works with science fiction authors, gathered within the "Red Team" ,  whose mission is to destabilize the armies with extreme scenarios, of which we publish a selection in full. The initiative is part of the great tradition of what the Anglo-Saxons call "What if", scenarios which attempt to anticipate strategic surprises with devastating effects. It is obviously a question of detecting the famous "black swans", theorized by the statistician Nassim Taleb . But not only. "We talk too much about the famous...
