At midday on Friday, large patches and streaks of red paint covered several feet in height and width of the facade of the Consulate, a Renaissance-style building on Manhattan's Upper East Side. noted an AFP photographer. The entrance gate has also been covered in red paint.

This act of vandalism comes as Russian President Vladimir Putin formalized the annexation of four Ukrainian territories on Friday, after referendums denounced as sham elections by many countries, the United States in the lead. The bright red paint appeared hours before Putin announced he was annexing four parts of Ukraine occupied by his army.

Shelling also killed at least 30 people in Ukraine's southern region of Zaporizhzhia – one of the worst attacks against civilians in months.

President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged the US-led military alliance Nato to grant Ukraine expedited membership, as international leaders including Joe Biden condemned Moscow's annexations.
